Entering Home
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5082

Say, 'He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born. Nor is there to Him any equivalent.' Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak, from the evil of what He has created, and from the evil of darkness when it settles, and from the evil of the blowers in knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies.' Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the retreating whisperer — who whispers in the breasts of mankind — from among the jinn and mankind.'

Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad. Allahus-Samad. Lam yalid wa lam yoolad. Wa lam yakul-lahu kufuwan ahad. Qul a'oodhu birabbil falaq. Min sharri ma khalaq. Wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab. Wa min sharrin-naffathaati fil 'uqad. Wa min sharri haasidin idha hasad. Qul a'oodhu birabbin-nas. Malikin-nas. Ilahin-nas. Min sharril waswasil khannas. Alladhee yuwaswisu fee sudoorin-nas. Minal jinnati wan-nas.

When to Read

While the primary recommendation for reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas and Al-Mu'awwidhatain (Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas) is three times in the morning and evening, their profound protective qualities make them excellent to recite at any moment you seek Allah's shield. Upon entering your home, you can recite them to bring blessings into your dwelling and to safeguard yourself and your family from all forms of evil, seen and unseen. The Prophet ﷺ also used to recite them before sleeping, blowing into his hands and wiping over his body, emphasizing their general protective power.

How to Read

Recite these three surahs – Surah Al-Ikhlas, then Surah Al-Falaq, then Surah An-Nas – thoughtfully, preferably three times. Focus on the meanings as you recite, internalizing the profound reliance on Allah for protection from every conceivable harm. You can recite them aloud or silently as you cross the threshold of your home, or once inside, ensuring your intention is to seek Allah's refuge.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting these three surahs is among the most powerful ways to seek Allah's protection. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ promised that whoever recites them three times in the morning and evening, 'they will suffice you against everything.' This includes protection from envy (hassad), the evil eye, black magic, the whisperings of shaytan (devils), and the harm caused by jinn and wicked people. By invoking Allah's Names and Attributes through these surahs, you establish a spiritual fortress around your home and your loved ones, inviting tranquility and warding off ill will and malevolent influences.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Say: Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad, and Al-Mu'awwidhatain, three times in the morning and evening, and they will suffice you against everything."
