Entering Home
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5087

In Allah's name we enter, and in Allah's name we exit, and in Allah our Lord we place our trust. O Allah, I ask of You the best of entry and the best of exit. In Allah's name we open, and in Allah's name we pray, and in Allah's name we eat, and in Allah's name we drink, and in Allah's name we exit, and in Allah we seek help.

Bismillah walajna, wa bismillah kharajna, wa 'ala Allah Rabbina tawakkalna. Allahumma inni as'aluka khayr al-mawlij wa khayr al-makhraj, bismillah fatahna, wa bismillah sallayna, wa bismillah akalna, wa bismillah sharibna, wa bismillah nakhruju, wa billahi nasta'een.

When to Read

This dua is recited upon entering your home. It's a beautiful way to begin your time inside, invoking Allah's name and seeking His blessings and protection for yourself and your household. It’s especially important in times when you might feel vulnerable to envy or the evil eye, as it encompasses a comprehensive seeking of good and refuge in Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a present heart, understanding that you are seeking Allah's presence and protection. Say it as you physically enter your home, whether alone or with family. It's not just a string of words; it's a declaration of reliance and a request for divine safeguarding against all forms of harm, seen and unseen.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua upon entering home ensures that you enter with Allah's name, which itself is a source of barakah (blessings) and protection. It seeks the best of entry and exit, encompassing all aspects of your time in the home and your comings and goings. By invoking Allah's name for every action – opening, praying, eating, drinking, exiting – you are essentially sanctifying your domestic life, making it a space under Allah's watchfulness, thereby deterring envy and evil eyes. This practice aligns with the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who taught us to begin everything with the name of Allah to seek His blessings and protection.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When a man enters his house, he should say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khayr al-mawlij wa khayr al-makhraj, bismillah walajna, wa bismillah kharajna, wa 'ala Allah Rabbina tawakkalna.' Then he should greet his family with the greeting of peace. And when he eats, he should say: 'Bismillah.' And when he drinks, he should say: 'Bismillah.' And when he sleeps, he should say: 'Bismillah.' And when he wakes up, he should say: 'Bismillah.' And when he walks, he should say: 'Bismillah.' And when he rides, he should say: 'Bismillah.' And when he enters his house, he should say: 'Bismillah.' So he mentioned a number of things, and then said: 'The Shaitan flees from such a house.' (Note: While the longer version with multiple 'Bismillah' recitations exists, the core dua for entering the home is widely accepted and narrated in Sahih Muslim.)
