Entering Home
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5098

In the name of Allah we enter, and in the name of Allah we leave, and upon Allah, our Lord, we depend. O Allah, I ask of You the best of entrance and the best of exit. Your name, our Lord, we believe in You, and upon You we depend. Our Lord, decide between us and our people justly, and You are the best of those who decide.

Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'ala Allahi Rabbana tawakkalna. Allahumma inni as'aluka khayr al-mawlij, wa khayr al-makhraj. Ismuka Rabbana, amanna bika, wa 'alayka tawakkalna. Rabbana-ftah baynana wa bayna qawmina bil-haqqi wa Anta khayr al-fatiheen.

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication is recommended to be recited when entering your home. It encompasses seeking Allah's blessings for both entering and leaving, acknowledging reliance on Him, and asking for divine guidance in all our affairs related to our homes and dealings with others.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and awareness of its meaning. Begin with 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah), acknowledging His presence and power in your actions. The full recitation is meant to be said upon entering the home. It is also beneficial to reflect on the reliance ('tawakkal') on Allah mentioned in the dua.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua when entering your home invites Allah's protection and blessings. It cultivates a habit of seeking divine help and guidance in all aspects of life, starting with the sanctuary of your home. The phrase 'Rabbana-ftah baynana wa bayna qawmina bil-haqqi' (Our Lord, decide between us and our people justly) also extends the dua's scope to seeking fairness and good judgment in all our interactions and community dealings, reflecting the Islamic principle of establishing justice.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin Busr Al-Mazini: The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us a supplication for when we enter the house: 'Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'ala Allahi Rabbana tawakkalna. Allahumma inni as'aluka khayr al-mawlij, wa khayr al-makhraj. Ismuka Rabbana, amanna bika, wa 'alayka tawakkalna. Rabbana-ftah baynana wa bayna qawmina bil-haqqi wa Anta khayr al-fatiheen.' (Our Lord, decide between us and our people justly, and You are the best of those who decide.) (This hadith is considered Hasan by some scholars due to its chain of narration, though it contains a request for judgment which is often associated with the dua for leaving home.)
