Dua for Entering Home: Seeking Allah's Guidance in Household Decisions

Entering Home
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5096

O Allah, I ask of You the best entrance and the best exit. In Allah's name we enter, and in Allah's name we leave, and in Allah, our Lord, we place our trust.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayr al-mawlij wa khayr al-makhraj, bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'ala Allahi Rabbana tawakkalna.

When to Read

This dua is recited when entering one's home, whether it's a permanent residence or a temporary dwelling. It's an opportune moment to invoke Allah's blessings and seek His protection for the sanctity and peace of the household.

How to Read

Recite this dua aloud or silently upon entering your home. It's beautiful to say 'Bismillah' before or as you open the door, and then follow with the full supplication. It's a way of acknowledging Allah's presence in our personal spaces and entrusting our affairs to Him.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua invites Allah's blessings (barakah) into the home, seeking His guidance for all decisions made within its walls. It's a declaration of reliance on Allah for safety, prosperity, and well-being within the family environment. By invoking His name, we acknowledge that everything – entering, leaving, and living – is ultimately dependent on Him, fostering humility and gratitude.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, 'When a man enters his house and mentions Allah the Mighty and Majestic at the time of his entry and at the time of his eating, Satan says: 'You have no place to pass the night and no dinner.' When he enters and does not mention Allah the Mighty and Majestic at the time of his entry, Satan says: 'You have found a place to spend the night,' and when he does not mention Allah the Mighty and Majestic at the time of his eating, Satan says: 'You have found a place to spend the night and dinner.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5095). While the hadith itself speaks of mentioning Allah, the longer dua above, taught by the Prophet ﷺ, encapsulates this principle perfectly for entering and exiting.
