Dua for Entering Home: Invoking Allah for Blessings and Protection

Entering Home
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3764

بِسْمِ اللهِ وَلَجْنَا، وَبِسْمِ اللهِ خَرَجْنَا، وَعَلَى اللهِ رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

In the name of Allah we enter, and in the name of Allah we leave, and in Allah, our Lord, we put our trust.

Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'alallahi Rabbana tawakkalna.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited when entering your home. It's a moment to pause and invoke Allah's blessings and protection over your dwelling and your family. Think of it as setting the tone for your time within your home, filling it with the remembrance of Allah from the very first step you take inside.

How to Read

Recite this sincerely, focusing on the meaning of each word. As you say 'Bismillahi walajna,' imagine yourself consciously entering your home under Allah's care. When you say 'wa bismillahi kharajna,' acknowledge that even your departures are guided by His name. Finally, 'wa 'alallahi Rabbana tawakkalna' is a powerful affirmation of your reliance on Allah for everything within and outside your home. It's also recommended to say 'Assalamu alaykum' upon entering, even if no one is home, as it is a sunnah practice that brings blessings, as mentioned in Sahih Muslim 2046.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua not only follows the beautiful Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ but also invites Allah's protection and barakah (blessings) into your home. It turns a simple act of entering into an act of worship, reminding us that our homes, like all aspects of our lives, are under Allah's dominion. This practice fosters a spiritual atmosphere within the household, a constant reminder of our dependence on Allah and His ever-present grace. It also helps in warding off any potential harm or negativity, as our entry is marked by seeking refuge and trust in the Almighty.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When a man enters his house, he should say: 'Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'alallahi Rabbana tawakkalna.' (In the name of Allah we enter, and in the name of Allah we leave, and in Allah, our Lord, we put our trust.) And when he enters his prayer-place, he should say: 'Assalamu alaykum.' (Peace be upon you.)' Note: While the full hadith text here mentions entering a prayer-place, the specific dua for entering the house is derived from this narration in Sunan Abi Dawud. The practice of saying 'Assalamu alaykum' upon entering the home, even when empty, is also a related Sunnah practice with its own merits.
