Entering Home
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3764

بِسْمِ اللهِ وَلَجْنَا، وَبِسْمِ اللهِ خَرَجْنَا، وَعَلَى اللهِ رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

In Allah's name we enter, and in Allah's name we exit, and in Allah our Lord we place our trust.

Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'alallahi Rabbina tawakkalna.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited as you or your family members enter your home. It's a moment to pause and imbue your home with Allah's remembrance and protection. Imagine stepping over the threshold, saying this, and immediately setting a positive, blessed tone for whoever is inside and for all activities within those walls.

How to Read

Recite this with sincerity and a clear intention of seeking Allah's blessings and protection for your home and family. It’s meant to be said aloud, or at least with audible intent, as you enter. Think of it as a gentle announcement to the world and to the unseen that you enter under Allah's care. Some scholars mention that when entering an empty home, one can say: 'Bismillahi tawakkaltu 'alallah' (In Allah's name I trust).' > **Arabic:** بِسْمِ اللهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللهِ > **Translation:** 'In Allah's name I trust.' > **Transliteration:** *Bismillahi tawakkaltu 'alallah* > > However, the longer dua specifically covers both entering and exiting, making it comprehensive for a lived-in home.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua acts as both a declaration of faith and a request for divine protection. By invoking Allah's name upon entering, you are essentially placing your home and everyone in it under His watchful eye. It’s a way to invite His barakah (blessing) into your dwelling, fostering an atmosphere of peace and security. It also serves as a reminder that our homes are not just physical spaces but are trusts from Allah, which we are responsible for maintaining and filling with goodness. The act of remembering Allah upon entry and exit keeps Him present in our daily lives and strengthens our reliance on Him, which indirectly strengthens family bonds through shared remembrance and seeking comfort in Allah's protection together.

It was narrated from Anas that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When a man enters his house, mention Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. For when he enters his house and mentions Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, Shaitan says: 'You have no place to pass the night.' When he enters his house and does not mention Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, Shaitan says: 'You have found a place to pass the night.'' Imam Abu Dawud then narrated: It was narrated from Jabir bin 'Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When a man enters his house, let him say: 'O Allah, I ask You for the best of entry and the best of exit. In the name of Allah we enter, and in the name of Allah we exit, and in Allah our Lord we place our trust.' Then let him greet his family.' — Sunan Abi Dawud 3764
