Dua for Entering the Bathroom When Feeling Ill

Entering Bathroom
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 142

بِسْمِ اللهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female devils.

Bismillahi, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.

When to Read

This dua is recited upon entering the bathroom. While it's a general supplication for entering any toilet, it becomes particularly relevant when one feels unwell. Entering the bathroom, especially when feeling ill, can expose one to unseen harms or discomforts. Reciting this dua seeks Allah's protection in this vulnerable state.

How to Read

Recite this dua clearly before stepping into the bathroom. It is the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) before doing anything significant, and this supplication is a specific form of that remembrance. It is also recommended to delay entering the bathroom and to enter with the left foot and exit with the right, reversing the etiquette for leaving.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua to seek refuge in Allah from evil spirits (khubuth means wicked ones, khaba'ith means wicked female ones) that frequent places of impurity. Entering the bathroom, which is a place often associated with impurity, makes it a potential dwelling for such entities. By seeking Allah's protection, we safeguard ourselves from any potential harm, whisperings, or negative influences that might be present. This is part of the comprehensive way Islam teaches us to protect ourselves in all aspects of life, even in seemingly mundane actions.

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ, when entering the toilet, used to say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil ones, male and female).
