Dua for Entering the Bathroom: Seeking Refuge from Evil

Entering Bathroom
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 6306 (Bukhari), 375 (Muslim)

بِسْمِ اللهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from all evil jinn, male and female.

Bismillah, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.

When to Read

This supplication should be recited just before entering the bathroom or toilet. It's a moment where we are most vulnerable to the whispers and influences of Shaytan and evil jinn, as this is a place where one is typically unclothed and separated from worldly affairs. Saying this dua prepares our spiritual defense before we enter.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a clear intention to seek Allah's protection. It's typically said upon approaching the entrance to the bathroom. While some scholars mention reciting it before stepping in with the left foot and exiting with the right, the primary focus is the supplication itself. Ensure you are facing away from the Qiblah when relieving yourself, as per the Sunnah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful shield against the temptations and negative influences of Shaytan and the jinn. The bathroom is often considered a place where these beings congregate. By seeking refuge in Allah with this specific supplication, we are invoking His divine protection over ourselves during a time of physical vulnerability. It's a practical application of our Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and reliance on Him, turning even the most mundane act into an opportunity for worship and seeking divine safeguard.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When one of you intends to enter the toilet, he should say: *Bismillah, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.* (In the name of Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from all evil jinn, male and female.)' References: Sahih al-Bukhari 6306, Sahih Muslim 375. The meaning of 'al-khubuth' and 'al-khaba'ith' is interpreted as referring to the evil jinn (male and female) that inhabit such places.
