Dua for Strength to Resist the Whispers of Satan

Difficulty
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the evil suggestions of devils, and from their being present.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tāmāti min ghadabihi wa 'iqābihi, wa min sharri 'ibādihi, wa min hamazātish-shayātīni wa an yahdurūn.

When to Read

This dua is incredibly potent when you feel the subtle, persistent whispers of Satan trying to lead you astray, sow doubt, or tempt you into sin. Recite it when you're about to embark on something important that might be challenged by Shaytan's influence, or simply when you feel a general need for spiritual protection. It's particularly useful during times of temptation, anxiety, or when facing internal struggles against negative thoughts.

How to Read

Recite this supplication sincerely, focusing on the meaning of seeking Allah's ultimate protection. It is recommended to recite it three times in the morning and three times in the evening for comprehensive protection. Blowing gently into your hands after reciting and wiping over your body is also a sunnah practice associated with similar protective duas (as found with Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas). Maintain a state of belief in Allah's power to shield you.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, offers comprehensive refuge. It protects against Allah's anger and punishment by seeking closeness to His perfect words. It shields you from the evil intentions and actions of other creations, and specifically guards against the insidious whispers (hamazat) of devils, preventing them from influencing your heart and mind or being present to tempt you. Consistent recitation fortifies your spiritual defenses against Shaytan's constant attempts to misguide us.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'He who says: 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tāmāti min ghadabihi wa 'iqābihi, wa min sharri 'ibādihi, wa min hamazātish-shayātīni wa an yahdurūn' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the evil suggestions of devils, and from their being present), - then it will be a protection for him against every evil.' Another narration mentions reciting it three times in the morning and three times in the evening.
