Dua for Strength When Facing a Stubborn Illness

Difficulty
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2739

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your wrath, and all of Your displeasure.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuj'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is incredibly valuable when you're facing a difficult or persistent illness that feels overwhelming. It's not just about asking for healing, but for the inner strength and patience to endure the trial. Recite it when you feel your faith wavering under the strain of sickness, or when the illness seems to be taking a toll on your well-being and your ability to cope.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincere intention and conviction. Raise your hands as you would in other supplications, placing your palms together. Start by acknowledging Allah's might and seeking refuge specifically in Him. Utter these words with a clear understanding of what you are asking for: protection from the loss of ease, a return to health, and avoidance of His anger. It's best recited after prayers or at times when duas are more likely to be accepted, like the last third of the night or between the Adhan and Iqamah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers profound spiritual benefits, especially during illness. It teaches us to turn to Allah not just for the removal of hardship, but for the preservation of His favors and protection from His displeasure, which is a far greater concern. By seeking refuge in these specific ways, we acknowledge our complete dependence on Allah and seek His encompassing care. It fosters resilience and patience, transforming a personal struggle into an act of worship and seeking closeness to the Creator.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge (in Allah) in prayer, saying: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of Hellfire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah.' And he used to seek refuge in You from the completion of sins. And he said: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, and the change of Your protection, and the suddenness of Your wrath, and all that You are displeased with.'
