Dua for Strength Against Difficult Habits

Difficulty
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3701

O Allah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your female slave. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is inevitable. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness, and the remover of my anxieties.

Allahumma inni 'abduk, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyati bi-yadik, madin fiyya hukmuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bi-kulli ismin huwa lak sammaita bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This powerful dua is for moments when you feel overwhelmed by a habit that's difficult to break. Recite it when you're seeking Allah's direct intervention to grant you the strength, clarity, and motivation needed to change. It's especially fitting when you feel a lack of control or are struggling with willpower.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincere intention and conviction. Face the Qiblah if possible, raise your hands as the Prophet ﷺ used to do when making supplication, and pour your heart out to Allah. Believe that He is the only one who can grant you the ability to overcome this difficulty. Repeating it consistently can reinforce your reliance on Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is profoundly comprehensive. It acknowledges Allah's absolute sovereignty over our lives ('My forelock is in Your hand') and His perfect justice ('Your decree concerning me is just'). By invoking Allah by all His beautiful names, known and unknown, you are emphasizing His perfect ability to answer your plea. The core request – making the Qur'an the 'springtime of the heart' – signifies seeking spiritual renewal and strength through Allah's guidance, which is the ultimate antidote to any negative habit or spiritual ailment. It addresses deep-seated worries and sadness, offering solace and a path to peace.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'There is no servant among the servants of Allah who says: Allahumma inni 'abduk, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyati bi-yadik, madin fiyya hukmuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bi-kulli ismin huwa lak sammaita bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi. Except that his anxiety will be removed, and his worry will be replaced by joy.' They asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we not learn these words?' He replied: 'Yes, it is befitting for him who hears them to say them.' (Reported by Ahmad and authenticated by al-Albani as Hasan)
