Difficulty
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 833

O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of Hellfire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabri, wa min 'adhabi jahannama, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal.

When to Read

This is a profoundly important dua that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would recite regularly, particularly during his prayers, before the final Tasleem (salutation). It's highly recommended for us to adopt this practice, making it a consistent part of our daily prayers, especially before concluding our salah. Reciting it in times of worry or contemplation about the hereafter can also bring immense peace and strength.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere focus and conviction. Understand that you are directly calling upon Allah, seeking His ultimate protection. The sincerity of your heart and your reliance on Allah are key. It's a supplication that flows from understanding the reality of the afterlife and a deep yearning for Allah's mercy.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking refuge from four major fears: the torment of the grave, the punishment of Hellfire, the trials of this world and the grave, and the specific tribulation of the Dajjal. By internalizing and reciting this, we are actively seeking Allah's protection against the most significant spiritual and physical challenges we will face. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself taught this specific wording, indicating its immense importance and efficacy. As stated in Sahih Muslim 588, the Prophet ﷺ said, 'When any one of you finishes his Salat, he should supplicate for things of security from Allah in the first place.' This dua is a prime example of such supplication.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would seek refuge in Allah from four things, saying: 'O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of Hellfire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal).' (Sahih al-Bukhari 833). Another narration in Sahih Muslim states: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us the Istikharah prayer in all matters as he taught us the Surahs of the Qur'an. He said: 'If anyone of you is concerned about a matter he should observe two prayers other than obligatory prayers and then say: O Allah, I seek guidance from Your knowledge and power from Your might, and I seek of Your great bounty. Verily You are able and I am not. You know all of the things that are hidden.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1166). And in Sahih Muslim (588), it is narrated: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the grave, and he used to say: O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the torment of the Fire, and I seek refuge with You from the torment of the grave, and I seek refuge with You from the ordeal of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge with You from the afflictions of the life and death.'
