Difficulty
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 4423

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overpowering of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This powerful dua is a comprehensive supplication that can be recited at any time, but it is especially beneficial to invoke when feeling overwhelmed by worries, facing financial difficulties, or anticipating potential debt. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often recite this dua, highlighting its importance for seeking Allah's protection from life's significant burdens.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, understanding the meaning of each phrase. It's recommended to raise your hands slightly while reciting, as is the practice during supplication. Ensure you are in a state of purity (wudu) if possible, though it is not strictly required for this general remembrance. Make it a habit to include this dua in your daily supplications, particularly after the obligatory prayers.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers multifaceted protection. By seeking refuge in Allah from distress and sorrow, we are shielded from the mental and emotional toll of difficulties. Protection from incapacity and laziness helps maintain our ability to strive and work towards solutions. Seeking refuge from cowardice and stinginess fosters courage and generosity, essential traits for managing life's challenges. Most crucially, seeking refuge from 'the overpowering of debt' directly addresses the immense pressure and hardship that accumulating debt can bring, while 'the subjugation of men' protects against being exploited or controlled due to financial vulnerability.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: Once the Prophet (ﷺ) entered the mosque. He saw a man from among the Ansar called Abu Umamah. He asked: 'What is the matter with you? Why are you sitting in the mosque when it is not the time for prayer?' He replied: 'It is worry and debts, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Shall I not teach you words that, if you say them, Allah will remove worry from you and pay your debt for you?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Say in the morning and in the evening: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief. I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness. I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess. I seek refuge in You from being overpowered by debt and by men.' He said: 'I did that, and Allah removed my worry and paid my debt.'
