Difficulty
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency (or contentment).

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina

When to Read

This dua is particularly vital when facing financial difficulties. When the pressure of debt, lack of provision, or the sheer need for money starts to cloud your judgment and tempt you towards unlawful means, this is the perfect time to turn to Allah. Recite it after every obligatory prayer, or whenever you feel the whispers of temptation or despair creeping in. It's a shield against straying when you most need stability.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a sincere heart. Raise your hands as you do for other supplications, ensuring you are in a state of purity if possible. Focus on the meaning of each word: asking Allah for the inner compass (guidance), the inner strength to obey Him (piety), the inner purity that keeps you from seeking what is forbidden (chastity), and the inner richness that makes you content with what He provides (self-sufficiency/contentment). Believe that Allah, in His infinite mercy, will grant you what you ask.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua asks for four essential qualities that protect one from falling into haram (forbidden) in times of need. 1. **Guidance (الهدى - al-huda):** The initial step is to be shown the right path, making it clear what is permissible and what is not. Without guidance, one can easily stumble. 2. **Piety (التقى - at-tuqa):** This is the consciousness of Allah, the fear of His displeasure that prevents one from transgressing His limits, even when no one else is watching. It's the internal monitor that alarms you when you're about to cross a line. 3. **Chastity/Self-Sufficiency ('العفاف - al-'afaf):** This encompasses refraining from seeking what is not rightfully yours and maintaining one's honor. In a financial context, it means not resorting to theft, fraud, bribery, or any other forbidden means of acquiring wealth. 4. **Self-Sufficiency/Contentment (الغنى - al-ghina):** This is often understood as contentment with what Allah has provided, making one feel rich and independent, not needing to rely on unlawful means. It's the internal wealth that poverty cannot touch. By asking for these four, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was asking for a complete package of protection against the temptations that poverty can bring.
