Dua for Protection from Hardship and Weakness in Old Age

Difficulty
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2710

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demolition of Your blessings, and the changing of Your good health, and the suddenness of Your wrath, and all of Your displeasure. And I seek refuge in You from the trials of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of wealth, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of poverty, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of the Dajjal. O Allah, wash away my sins with the water of snow and hail. And purify my heart from sins, just as a white garment is purified from dirt. And keep me far from my sins, just as You have kept the East far from the West. O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment. And I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, and from a heart that does not humble itself, and from a soul that is not satisfied, and from a supplication that is not answered.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to teach this supplication to his companions as a means of seeking protection from various ills, emphasizing its importance in their lives and for future generations. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When one of you finishes his prayer, let him seek refuge in Allah from four things, by saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab jahannam, wa 'adhab al-qabr, wa fitnat al-mahya wal-ma'at, wa fitnat al-masih ad-dajjal.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, and the punishment of the grave, and the trials of life and death, and the evil of the trial of the Masih ad-Dajjal.)" This specific dua, though longer, contains similar themes of seeking refuge and purification, reflecting the comprehensive nature of the Prophet's teachings on seeking Allah's protection against all forms of difficulty, including those that may befall in old age.
