The Supplication During the Janazah Prayer

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 970

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You keep alive among us, keep him alive on Islam, and whoever You cause to die among us, cause him to die on faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not lead us astray after him. O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him, honor his hospitality and make his grave spacious, wash him with water, snow, and hail, and cleanse him from sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. Give him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and from the punishment of the Fire.

*Allahumma-ghfir li-hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shāhidinā wa ghā'ibinā, wa ṣaghīrinā wa kabīrinā, wa dhakarinā wa unthānā. Allahumma man aḥyaytahu minnā fa-aḥyihi 'ala al-Islām, wa man tawaffaytahu minnā fa-tawaffahu 'ala al-Imān. Allahumma lā taḥrimnā ajrahu, wa lā tuḍillinā ba'dahu. Allahumma-ghfir lahu wa-rḥamhu, wa 'āfihi wa-'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' madkhalahu, waghsilhu bi-l-mā'i wa-th-thalji wa-l-baradi, wa naqqihi mina-l-khaṭāyā kamā yunaqqā ath-thawbu-l-abyaḍu mina ad-danasi, wa abdilhu dāran khayran min dārihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa adkhilhu-l-Jannah, wa a'idhhu min 'adhābi-l-qabri, wa min 'adhābi-n-Nār.*

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication is recited during the Janazah prayer, which is the funeral prayer performed for a deceased Muslim. It is typically recited after the second Takbir (saying Allahu Akbar) and before the third Takbir, in the fourth unit of the prayer.

How to Read

The Janazah prayer is performed standing, with four Takbirs in total. After the first Takbir, one recites the opening supplication (if they know it) or Al-Fatiha. After the second Takbir, this specific dua for the deceased is recited. After the third Takbir, blessings are sent upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. After the fourth Takbir, the prayer concludes with Tasleem (saying As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah). This dua is central to seeking mercy and forgiveness for the departed.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound act of mercy and love for the deceased Muslim. By reciting it, we actively ask Allah to forgive their sins, expand their grave, grant them a place in Paradise, and protect them from the torment of the grave and the Fire. It reflects our responsibility to continue aiding our fellow Muslims even after they have passed from this world, seeking Allah's ultimate mercy for them. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this specific wording, indicating its immense importance and efficacy in seeking Allah's forgiveness and compassion for the deceased.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led the funeral prayer and said: 'Allahumma-ghfir li-hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shāhidinā wa ghā'ibinā, wa ṣaghīrinā wa kabīrinā, wa dhakarinā wa unthānā. Allahumma man aḥyaytahu minnā fa-aḥyihi 'ala al-Islām, wa man tawaffaytahu minnā fa-tawaffahu 'ala al-Imān. Allahumma lā taḥrimnā ajrahu, wa lā tuḍillinā ba'dahu.' He then said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him, honor his hospitality and make his grave spacious, wash him with water, snow, and hail, and cleanse him from sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. Give him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and from the punishment of the Fire.' (Sahih Muslim 970)
