Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him, have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his reception, make his grave spacious, wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Grant him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma-ghfir lahū wa-rḥamhu wa 'āfihī wa-'fu 'anhu wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassi' madkhalahu waghsilhu bil-mā'i wath-thalji wal-baradi wa naqqihi minal-khaṭāyā kamā yunaqqath-thawbul-abyaḍu minad-danasi wa abdilhu dāran khayran min dārihī wa aylan khayran min ahlihī wa zawjan khayran min zawjihī wa adkhilhul-jannata wa a'idhhu min 'adhābil-qabri wa min 'adhābin-nāri

When to Read

This is the general supplication the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to recite for any deceased Muslim. While martyrs have a special status, this dua is still appropriate and beneficial for them, asking for Allah's immense mercy and forgiveness. It can be recited at any time, especially during funerals, after burial, or as ongoing charity for the deceased.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart, believing in Allah's vast mercy. It is traditionally recited by the living for the benefit of the deceased, aiming to ease their passage and elevate their status in the hereafter. Focus on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua covers essential requests for the deceased: forgiveness, mercy, well-being, and an honorable reception in the hereafter. For martyrs, it seeks to combine their immense reward for sacrificing their lives with Allah's general mercy for all believers. The Prophet ﷺ stated: 'When a person dies, his deeds end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who supplicates for him.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). This dua serves as a powerful form of ongoing charity and supplication.

Source & Authentication

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When you attend the funeral, say good things, for the angels say Amen to what you say.' Umm Salamah said: 'Then a person asked him: O Messenger of Allah, what should we say? He said: Say: O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and grant him well-being, and pardon him, and honor his reception, and make his grave spacious, and wash him with water and snow and hail, and cleanse him from his sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt, and grant him a home better than his home, and a family better than his family, and grant him entry into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.'
