Dua for the Deceased: Seeking Allah's Mercy for Their Sins

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1504

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present among us and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You keep alive from among us, keep him alive in Islam, and whoever You cause to die from among us, cause him to die in faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us stray after him.

Allahumma-ghfir li hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarina wa unthana. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa-ahyihi 'ala al-Islam, wa man tawaffahu minna fa-tawaffahu 'ala al-iman. Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu wa la tudillana ba'dahu.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication that can be recited during the funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) or as a general dua for the deceased at any time. It's particularly poignant when remembering those who have passed, seeking Allah's forgiveness for any burdens they may carry.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. The funeral prayer is performed standing, and this dua is often recited after the initial Takbeer (saying Allahu Akbar) and before the final Tasleem. When reciting individually, face the direction of the Qiblah (Mecca) if possible, and raise your hands in supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a profound plea to Allah for comprehensive forgiveness and mercy for the deceased, encompassing all of their past and present, their visible and hidden states, and their age groups. It also includes a vital supplication for the living: to live and die upon Islam and Iman. By asking Allah not to deprive us of the deceased's reward and not to let us stray after them, we are asking for their positive influence to continue and for our own guidance. This supplication is a powerful expression of our interconnectedness in faith, even after death, and our reliance on Allah's infinite mercy.

‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught them how to say in the funeral prayer: O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our young and our old, our males and our females, our present and our absent. O Allah, whoever You keep alive from among us, keep him alive in Islam, and whoever You cause to die from among us, cause him to die in faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us stray after him. Sahih Muslim 1504
