O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, grant him relief and pardon him. Honor his hospitality and make his entrance spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Exchange his home for a better home, his family for a better family, and his spouse for a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
When to Read
This is a comprehensive supplication that can be made for any deceased Muslim, particularly during difficult times like their burial and the initial period in the grave. It is a beautiful and comprehensive prayer to recite on behalf of the departed when visiting their grave, attending their funeral prayer, or even making dua for them at any time, especially during the first night in the grave when they are most vulnerable and facing the initial questioning.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Face the Qiblah if possible, though it is not a strict condition for personal supplication. Imagine the deceased in their grave and earnestly ask Allah to grant them the immense blessings and protection mentioned in the dua. The intention behind the dua is paramount, focusing on seeking Allah's mercy and forgiveness for the departed soul.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication encapsulates a profound request for the deceased's well-being in the afterlife. It asks for: 1. **Forgiveness and Mercy:** ('Allahumma-ghfir lahu warhamhu') Allah's forgiveness and mercy are the ultimate keys to Paradise. 2. **Ease and Pardon:** ('wa 'afihi wa'fu 'anhu') Seeking Allah's protection from trials and sins, and His pardon. 3. **Comfort in the Grave:** ('wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassi' mudkhalahu') Asking Allah to make their resting place comfortable and spacious, a sign of Allah's honor. 4. **Purification:** ('Waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataya kama yunaqqa-th-thawbu-l-abyadu minad-danasi') A powerful metaphor for seeking Allah's complete purification of their sins, just as impurities are washed away. 5. **Better Abode:** ('wa abdilhu daran khayran min darrihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi') This beautiful request asks Allah to replace their worldly life and all its attachments with something far superior in Paradise. 6. **Protection from Punishment:** ('wa adkhilhul-jannata, wa a'idhhu min 'adhab-il-qabri wa min 'adhabin-nar') The ultimate goal – entering Paradise and being shielded from the torments of the grave and the Hellfire. Making this dua is a manifestation of our Islamic duty to our deceased brethren, embodying the Prophet's ﷺ teaching: 'When a person dies, all their deeds end except for three: an ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who supplicates for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631)
Source & Authentication
When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was accompanying a funeral procession, he stopped and said, 'Is there anyone among you who has done this (recited a prayer for the deceased)?' They said, 'No.' He said, 'Do you have anything?' They said, 'No.' He then said, 'This is the prayer of the living for the dead.' (O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our witnesses and our absent, our males and our females, our young and our old, those of us whom You have kept alive, and those whom You have caused to die. O Allah, whoever among us You cause to live, let him live upon Islam, and whoever You cause to die, let him die upon faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not cause us to go astray after him.) Then he said, 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, grant him relief and pardon him. Honor his hospitality and make his entrance spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Exchange his home for a better home, his family for a better family, and his spouse for a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.'
