Seeking Allah's Mercy for the Deceased's Unpaid Obligations

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2137

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You keep alive among us, keep him alive on Islam, and whoever You cause to die among us, cause him to die on faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us stray after him.

Allahumma ighfir li hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakariina wa unthana. Allahumma man ahayyatahu minna fa-ahyihi 'ala al-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu 'ala al-iman. Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu, wa la tudhillana ba'dahu.

When to Read

This is a general supplication for the deceased, which is especially pertinent when we know someone has passed away with outstanding obligations towards Allah, such as unpaid Zakat or an unfulfilled Hajj. Reciting it after their passing, and continuing to do so regularly, is a way to seek Allah's mercy on their behalf.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Focus on the meaning of the words, asking for forgiveness and mercy for the deceased, and for steadfastness in faith for yourself and the community. It's best recited after the funeral prayer or at any time you remember the deceased.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encompasses requests for forgiveness for all Muslims, living and deceased. Specifically concerning the deceased, it asks Allah to forgive their sins and overlook any shortcomings. For those who have departed with unpaid obligations, this supplication acts as a means for us to fulfill what they might not have been able to, by asking Allah to cover those debts through His immense mercy. It also serves to remind us of our own mortality and the importance of living and dying on faith.

Source & Authentication

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'When you see a funeral procession, stop (for a while) and stand, and do not follow it with shouting or any other [vain] talk.' Then he turned to Abu al-Ahwas (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: 'What is this (kind of talk)?' He said: 'We were just making fun (of them).' The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'O people, verily the like of these funeral processions are to bring great reminders of death, so do not bring to them what makes you laugh, but rather weep. And the supplication (made for the deceased) is their greeting, and the prayer (for them) is their sustenance.' Then he said: 'O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our present and our absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You keep alive among us, keep him alive on Islam, and whoever You cause to die among us, cause him to die on faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us stray after him.'
