O Allah, forgive [name of deceased], have mercy on him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his hospitality, make his grave spacious, wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him of sins just as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Replace his worldly home with a better one, his family with a better one, and his spouse with a better one. Admit him into Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
Allahumma-ghfir li [fulan], wa-rhamhu, wa 'afihi, wa-f'u 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' madkhalahu, wa-ghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataaya kama nuqqiyas-thawbul-abyadhu minad-danasi, wa abdilhu daaran khayran min daarih, wa ahlan khayran min ahlih, wa zawjan khayran min zawjih, wa adkhilhul-jannata, wa a'idhhu min 'adhab-il-qabri wa 'adhabin-naar.
When to Read
This is the general supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for any deceased Muslim. When making dua for someone who struggled with envy, you can still use this comprehensive prayer. The intention behind your dua is key, asking Allah to overlook their shortcomings and grant them His vast mercy.
How to Read
This dua should be recited with sincerity and humility, asking Allah directly for forgiveness and mercy for the deceased. It is permissible to replace '[fulan]' with the actual name of the deceased. This dua is ideally recited after the funeral prayer or at any time one remembers the deceased, especially during times of reflection and prayer like after Salah or during Tahajjud.
Virtues & Benefits
This profound dua encompasses multiple requests for the deceased: forgiveness for sins, mercy from Allah, protection from punishment, and elevation in status in the hereafter. It acknowledges the earthly struggles and asks for a beautiful transition to the next life. By asking Allah to 'cleanse him of sins just as a white garment is cleansed of dirt,' we are asking for complete purification. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself would often make this exact supplication.
