Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive [Name of deceased], have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, and pardon him. Make his resting place honorable and his entrance spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Grant him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma-ghfir li [Name of deceased] war-hamhu wa 'aafihi wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassi' madkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataya kama naqqayta-th-thawba-l-abyada min ad-danasi, wa abdilhu daran khayran min daarihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa adkhilhul-jannata, wa a'idhhu min 'adhabi-l-qabri wa 'adhabi-n-nar.

When to Read

This supplication is recited when attending the funeral prayer for a Muslim, or when visiting their grave, or at any time when remembering them and wishing to supplicate for them. It is particularly poignant when one is aware that the deceased may have committed minor shirk, as this dua encompasses a comprehensive plea for Allah's forgiveness and mercy for all their shortcomings.

How to Read

When reciting this dua, it is recommended to focus on its meaning and sincerely ask Allah for His boundless mercy. Replace '[Name of deceased]' with the actual name of the person. It is best to recite it with a humble heart and a firm belief in Allah's ability to forgive and accept prayers. While the specific phrasing is from a hadith about a deceased Muslim in general, its comprehensive nature makes it suitable for seeking forgiveness for those who might have inadvertently fallen into minor shirk, as Allah's mercy is vast and He forgives all sins except associating partners with Him (shirk akbar) if one dies upon it without repentance.

Virtues & Benefits

This is the standard supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for a deceased Muslim. Its comprehensive nature covers forgiveness for sins, mercy, relief from the grave, and entry into Paradise. The Prophet's ﷺ teaching of this dua shows its immense benefit for the deceased, as their deeds are cut off upon death, but the supplications of the living can still reach them and benefit them greatly. Reciting this dua is an act of kindness and remembrance, fulfilling a communal obligation and seeking Allah's immense grace for our departed brothers and sisters.

Yahya related to me from Malik, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'When you see a funeral procession, stand up. Whoever sees a funeral procession, let him stand until it has passed or he has put it down.' Yahya said, 'Malik said concerning the prayer for the dead: "O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our young and our old, our males and our females, our absent and our present, our free and our slaves. O Allah, whoever among us You keep alive, keep him alive on Islam, and whoever among us You cause to die, cause him to die on faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us go astray after him."
