اللَّهُمَّ أَجْرِنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي وَأَخْلِفْنِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا
O Allah, reward me in this calamity and give me in exchange that which is better.
Allahumma ajirni fi museebati wa-akhlifni khayran minha
When to Read
This dua is incredibly powerful for anyone facing a calamity, especially the profound loss of a child. It's meant to be recited immediately after the loss occurs, or at any point when one feels the weight of grief and seeks Allah's solace and reward.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere conviction, focusing on the profound trust you place in Allah's plan. Imagine saying it while looking up at the sky, surrendering your pain to the One who created you and the child you lost. It's a moment of deep personal reflection and reliance on Allah.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a direct supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for times of immense hardship. By reciting it, a Muslim hopes to receive Allah's special reward ('ajr') for their patience during the tribulation. The second part of the dua, 'wa-akhlifni khayran minha' (and give me in exchange that which is better), is a plea for Allah to replace what was lost with something even greater, whether it's in this life or the hereafter. For parents who have lost children, this can mean the promise of their children interceding for them in Paradise, or a greater spiritual elevation for their own patience.

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Any slave who is afflicted by a calamity and makes this supplication: 'We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. O Allah, reward me in my calamity and give me in exchange that which is better than it,' then Allah will give him in exchange that which is better than it." Umm Salamah said: "And when Abu Salamah died, I said this supplication and Allah gave me in exchange better than him, a Messenger of Allah ﷺ (meaning, she married the Prophet ﷺ)." (Sahih Muslim 918)
