Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him. Honor his reception, make spacious his entrance, and cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his worldly home with a better one, his family with a better one, and his spouse with a better one. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

This comprehensive dua is suitable to be recited at any time after the passing of a person who was known for their humility. It is particularly beneficial to make it after the funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) or as part of our regular supplications for the deceased, especially when reflecting on their character and seeking Allah's immense grace for them.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt connection to the deceased and to Allah. Imagine the deceased's humility and seek Allah's highest favor upon them, recognizing that true honor comes from Him. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, asking Allah to bestow His mercy, forgiveness, and acceptance upon them. It is a beautiful practice to also make dua for ourselves to be granted such humility in life and a good end.

Virtues & Benefits

This prayer encompasses several key requests for the deceased: forgiveness, mercy, well-being, and pardon. The specific mention of 'honoring his reception' and 'making spacious his entrance' refers to the welcoming into the grave and the hereafter. The plea for cleansing with water, snow, and hail emphasizes purification from sins. The request for better replacements for their home, family, and spouse highlights the transition to Paradise. Ultimately, it seeks protection from grave and hellfire punishments and entry into Jannah. The emphasis on this prayer for a humble individual is to ask Allah to elevate their status in accordance with their modest nature, reflecting that true greatness is with Allah, and He elevates whom He wills.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from `Awf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed over a funeral and he stood and said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and grant him well-being and pardon him. Honor his reception, make spacious his entrance, and cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.' (He said): 'And the people said: 'And and and.'
