Dua for the Deceased: Seeking Mercy for Those Who Have Lost Their Loved Ones

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 904

O Allah, forgive [Full Name], son of [Father's Name], and raise his station among those who are guided. And leave behind for him descendants who will remain. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. And make his grave spacious and illuminate it for him.

Allahumma-ghfir li [Full Name] bin [Father's Name], warfa' darajatahu fil-mahdiyyin, wakhlufhu fi 'aqibihi fil-ghabirin, waghfir lana walahu ya Rabb al-'alamin, wafsah lahu fi qabrihi wa nawwir lahu fih.

When to Read

This dua is specifically for a deceased person. It's particularly poignant when recited for someone who has no close family left to pray for them, or for any deceased Muslim. You can recite it during funeral prayers, on a grave, or at any time you wish to make supplication for the deceased.

How to Read

It is best to recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt plea to Allah. If you are unfamiliar with the exact phrasing or your Arabic pronunciation is not strong, you can refer to the transliteration. It's also permissible to make dua in your own words, asking Allah to forgive the deceased, grant them mercy, and ease their passage in the grave. Mentioning the deceased's full name and their father's name is a way to specifically direct the supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates profound requests for the deceased: forgiveness, elevation of rank, remembrance through righteous offspring, and comfort in the grave. It reflects our duty as Muslims to continue praying for our departed brothers and sisters. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that a believer's prayers for another are a significant act of worship, and that the deceased benefit from such supplications. Allah says, 'And those who came after them say, 'Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith...' (Al-Hashr 59:10).

Source & Authentication

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) heard a commotion from the house of Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: 'What is this commotion?' They said: 'His son has died.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Bring him to me.' When he was brought to him, he said: 'O Allah, forgive Abu Musa's family, and his son.' Then he said: 'O Allah, make him a precursor for us and a treasure for us, and a reward for us, and a recommender for us, and accept his recommendation.' Then he said: 'O Allah, forgive [Full Name] bin [Father's Name], and raise his station among those who are guided. And leave behind for him descendants who will remain. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. And make his grave spacious and illuminate it for him.' Umm Salamah said: 'And I said: O Messenger of Allah, shall we take our little children to the graves?' He said: 'Yes, O Umm Salamah, for it softens the heart, and brings tears to the eyes, and brings to mind the Hereafter, but do not say what incurs Allah's wrath.'
