Dua for the Deceased: Seeking Forgiveness for Those Who Died Suddenly

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1504

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our present and our absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You keep alive among us, keep him alive upon Islam, and whoever You cause to die among us, cause him to die upon faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of its (i.e. the deceased's) reward, and do not let us go astray after him.

Allahumma-ghfir li hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarinā wa unthana. Allahumma man aḥyaytahu minna fa-aḥyihi 'ala al-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu 'ala al-iman. Allahumma la taḥrimna ajrahu wa la tuḍillana ba'dahu.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is recited during the funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) and can also be recited individually at any time for the deceased, especially for those whose state at death is unknown or who may have died without an opportunity to repent. It's a general supplication for all Muslims, living and deceased.

How to Read

This supplication is typically recited as part of the funeral prayer, which has specific steps and timings. When reciting individually, it should be done with sincerity and focus, turning towards the Qiblah if possible, with hands raised slightly in supplication. Focus on seeking Allah's mercy for the deceased and for yourself, asking for steadfastness on Islam and Iman.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a broad request for forgiveness and mercy for all Muslims, covering those present and absent, young and old, male and female. It specifically asks Allah to keep those alive upon Islam and to grant death upon faith to those who pass away. For a person who may have died suddenly without apparent repentance, this dua is particularly poignant as it asks for Allah's encompassing mercy, which may extend to them. Reciting it also reminds us of our own mortality and the importance of living and dying with faith.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When you offer the funeral prayer, say: Allahumma-ghfir li hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarinā wa unthana. Allahumma man aḥyaytahu minna fa-aḥyihi 'ala al-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu 'ala al-iman. Allahumma la taḥrimna ajrahu wa la tuḍillana ba'dahu.' (Sahih Muslim 1504)
