Dua for the Deceased: Seeking Ease from the Torment of the Grave

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him/her, have mercy on him/her, grant him/her ease, pardon him/her, honor his/her reception, make his/her grave spacious, cleanse him/her with water, snow, and hail. Purify him/her from sins just as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his/her home with a better home, his/her family with a better family, and his/her spouse with a better spouse. Enter him/her into Paradise, and protect him/her from the torment of the grave and from the torment of the Fire.

Allahumma-ghfir li (name of deceased, or 'li-haadha al-mayyit'), wa-rhamhu, wa-'aafih, wa-c'fu 'anhu, wa-akrim nuzulahu, wa-wassi' mudkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-maa-i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa-naqqihi minal-khataayaa kamaa yunaqqath-thawbul-abyadhu minad-danasi, wa-abdilhu daaran khayran min daarih, wa-ahlan khayran min ahlih, wa-zawjan khayran min zawcih, wa-adkhilhul-jannah, wa-a'idh-hu min 'adhaabil-qabri, wa-min 'adhaabin-naar.

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication is typically recited by the family or loved ones of the deceased during the funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) and is also highly recommended to be made individually or collectively after the burial and at any other suitable time, especially on occasions like Fridays or the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. Reciting it for the deceased is an act of immense kindness, as it directly pleads with Allah for their forgiveness, mercy, and protection from the trials of the grave and the Hellfire.

How to Read

When reciting this dua, it is important to do so with sincerity and conviction, believing in Allah's power to grant the request. Address Allah directly, visualizing the deceased and supplicating from your heart. If reciting it for a specific person, mention their name where indicated (e.g., 'Allahumma-ghfir *li-'abdika [name]* wa-rhamhu...'). While a specific posture isn't mandated beyond the general etiquette of dua, facing the Qiblah and raising one's hands can be done if performing it as a personal supplication. The most crucial aspect is the intention and the heartfelt plea to the Almighty.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound expression of love and care for the departed. By asking Allah to forgive sins, grant mercy, and provide ease, we are directly addressing the spiritual needs of the deceased in the grave. The mention of being cleansed 'as a white garment is purified from dirt' signifies seeking complete absolution. Furthermore, asking for a better home and family in Paradise and protection from the grave's torment and the Fire are pleas for the highest stations in the hereafter. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself taught this specific dua, highlighting its immense importance and the great reward for those who supplicate for their brethren in faith.

Source & Authentication

Narrated 'Auf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) praying over a deceased person. He said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and grant him relief, and make his grave spacious, and cleanse him with water, snow and hail, and purify him from his sins as a white garment is purified from dirt, and give him a home better than his home (in the world), and a family better than his family, and ward off from him the evil temptation of the grave, and (save him) from the punishment of the Hell-fire.' (He added for the deceased man): 'And let the deceased be pleased with Allah.'
