O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his reception, make his grave spacious, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
Allahummaghfir lahu, warhamhu, wa 'afihi, wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' madkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataaya kamaa yunaqqath-thawbul-abyadu minad-danasi, wa abdilhu daaran khayran min daarihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa adkhilhul-jannata, wa a'idhu min 'adhabil-qabri, wa min 'adhabin-naari.
When to Read
This is the standard supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to be recited when attending the funeral prayer for a deceased Muslim, or at any other time one wishes to make dua for them. It encompasses general pleas for Allah's mercy and forgiveness, which are crucial for addressing any shortcomings in worship or deeds the deceased may have had.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and humility, focusing your heart on seeking Allah's forgiveness and mercy for the deceased. It is recommended to raise your hands slightly while making dua, though this is not mandatory. The intention behind the dua is paramount – a genuine desire for the deceased's well-being in the Hereafter.
Virtues & Benefits
This comprehensive dua seeks Allah's multifaceted mercy for the deceased. It covers forgiveness for sins, relief from the trials of the grave, and ultimate entry into Paradise. By asking Allah to 'purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt,' we are specifically asking for cleansing from both major and minor sins, including those related to the performance of worship (like prayer, fasting, zakat, etc.) which might have been deficient. The Prophet's ﷺ teaching of this specific dua highlights its importance and comprehensiveness in fulfilling our duty to pray for those who have passed on.

It was narrated from 'Auf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the funeral prayer. I do not know what he said in his prayer. But he said: 'O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his reception, make his grave spacious, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.' He said: 'And the people said: "And we also ask your permission and wish that Allah forgives him and accepts his supplication." This is in the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the deceased."
