O Allah, forgive [Name of deceased son of Name of father], have mercy upon him, grant him relief, pardon him, honor his resting place, make his entrance wide, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
Allahumma-ghfir li-fulan bni fulan, wa-rham-hu, wa-'afi-hi, wa-'afu 'an-hu, wa-akrim nuzula-hu, wa-wassi' madkhala-hu, wa-ghsil-hu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-barad, wa-naqqi-hi minal-khataaya kama yunaqqa-th-thawbu-l-abyadu minad-danas, wa-abdil-hu daaran khayran min daari-hi, wa-ahlan khayran min ahli-hi, wa-zawjan khayran min zawji-hi, wa-adkhil-hul-jannah, wa-a'idh-hu min 'adhabil-qabri wa min 'adhabin-nar.
When to Read
This is the standard supplication recited by Muslims for any deceased person, regardless of their past deeds. While black magic is a grave sin, Allah's mercy is vast. Reciting this dua after someone's passing is a way for the living to seek forgiveness and mercy for the deceased, entrusting their ultimate judgment to Allah.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and humility, acknowledging Allah's absolute power and mercy. If you know the deceased's name, insert it where indicated. If not, you can still make the general supplication for all deceased Muslims. The core etiquette is a sincere heart seeking Allah's forgiveness for another soul.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking Allah's forgiveness for a deceased Muslim is a highly virtuous act. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). This dua falls under the category of seeking a righteous child's (or any believer's) prayer for the deceased.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from 'Awf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed over a funeral, and he stood and said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him relief and pardon him. Make his burial place spacious, and cleanse him with water, snow and hail. Cleanse him from his sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. Give him a home better than his home, and a family better than his family. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.' He said: 'And they wished that they had died with him.'
