Dua for the Deceased: Seeking Allah's Help During Life's Trials

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and grant him well-being, and pardon him. Make his resting place honorable, and his entrance wide. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Give him a home better than his home, and a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication is recited during the funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) and can also be recited individually for any deceased Muslim, especially when you are experiencing hardships in your own life. It's a profound way to remember the transient nature of this world and to seek Allah's mercy for both the living and the departed, acknowledging that true comfort and security are only with Him. Reciting this when feeling overwhelmed by life's difficulties can be a powerful reminder to turn to Allah for solace, not just for ourselves, but for those who have gone before us.

How to Read

This dua is best recited with sincerity and a humble heart, ideally after a fard (obligatory) prayer or during moments of personal reflection. While it's a standard part of the funeral prayer, reciting it on your own for the deceased, especially when you're going through a tough time, is a beautiful act of compassion and faith. Focus on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it, truly asking Allah to bestow His mercy and forgiveness upon the deceased, and in doing so, find a sense of peace and perspective for yourself.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua is a direct fulfillment of the Islamic injunction to pray for our Muslim brethren, both living and deceased. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this specific supplication for the deceased, highlighting its immense value. It is a means of seeking Allah's boundless mercy for the departed, asking Him to alleviate their burdens in the grave and the hereafter. For the one reciting it during a time of personal hardship, it serves as a powerful reminder of our reliance on Allah, connecting our own struggles to a larger spiritual purpose and offering a sense of shared humanity and hope for ultimate peace.

Source & Authentication

When the Prophet (ﷺ) prayed over a dead body, he would say: 'O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present among us and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever of us You keep alive, let him live in Islam, and whoever of us You cause to die, let him die in faith. O Allah, do not forbid us from his reward and do not send us astray after him.'
