Dua for the Deceased on Their Death Anniversary

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive [Name of the deceased], have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honour his reception, make his grave spacious, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his worldly home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Allahummaghfir li [Name of the deceased], warhamhu, wa 'aafihi, wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' madkhalahu, waghsilhu bilma'i waththalji walbaradi, wa naqqihi minal khataya kama yunaqqath thawbul abyadu minad danas, wa abdilhu daran khayran min daarihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa adkhilhul jannah, wa a'idhhu min 'adhabil qabri, wa min 'adhabin nar.

When to Read

This dua is particularly meaningful on the death anniversary of a loved one. It can be recited at any time, but many find it fitting to make it a part of their remembrance on this specific day. You can recite it individually, or gather with family to make it collectively. It's also a beautiful practice to include it in your regular supplications, especially during the blessed times like after prayers or on Fridays.

How to Read

The etiquette of making dua applies here. Face the Qiblah if possible, raise your hands, and supplicate with sincerity and conviction. Utter the name of the deceased in place of '[Name of the deceased]'. Remember that sincere supplication for the deceased is a profound act of love and connection that benefits them in the hereafter.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that the deeds of the living can benefit the deceased. This dua is a direct way to send mercy, forgiveness, and comfort to the departed soul. It embodies the essence of seeking Allah's (SWT) ultimate mercy for them, asking for the best of what Allah has for His believing servants in the Hereafter. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'When a person dies, all their deeds end except for three: a continuous charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). This dua, offered by a righteous child or any believer, falls under the category of supplication that reaches the deceased.
