Dua for the Deceased Before Burial: Seeking Allah's Mercy

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, and grant him well-being and pardon him. Be generous to him in hospitality and make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him of his sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Give him an abode better than his former home, and a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma-ghfir lahu wa-rhamhu wa 'aafihi wa-'afu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu wa-wassi' mudkhalahu, wa-ghsilhu bil-maa'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa-naqqihi minal-khataaya kama nuqqiyath-thawbul-abyadu minad-danasi, wa abdilhu daaran khairan min daarihi, wa ahlan khairan min ahlihi, wa zawjan khairan min zawjihi, wa adkhilhul-jannata, wa a'idhu min 'adhabil-qabri wa 'adhabin-naar.

When to Read

This supplication is ideally recited when standing at the graveside, just before or as the body is being lowered into the grave. It's a moment of profound reflection and a direct appeal to Allah for the deceased's eternal peace.

How to Read

This dua is a comprehensive plea for the deceased. It's recited by the one leading the funeral prayer or any Muslim present who wishes to supplicate. It’s important to recite it with sincerity and heartfelt humility, focusing on the mercy of Allah and the finality of this life. The wording addresses Allah directly, seeking forgiveness, mercy, and protection for the departed soul.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua encapsulates the core needs of a deceased person in the hereafter. By asking for Allah's forgiveness, mercy, well-being, and pardon, we are actively seeking to alleviate their struggles and elevate their status. The specific mention of cleansing with water, snow, and hail symbolizes a complete purification from sins. Asking for a better home, family, and spouse in Paradise highlights our hope for their ultimate reward. Most importantly, seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave and the Fire is a fundamental plea for their salvation.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i: I attended the funeral of a man from among the Muslims. When we reached the grave, it had not yet been dug. The Prophet ﷺ stood and we stood around him. He was seeking refuge (saying): 'O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, when Allah's Messenger ﷺ (even) seeks refuge from the punishment of the grave, and it is (a reality)?' He said: 'Yes, (it is a reality) when the earth grips you (i.e., the grave), it is punishment.' Then he (the Prophet ﷺ) turned his face to us and said: 'O people, seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the Fire and seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave, and seek refuge in Allah from the temptations which are manifest and which are hidden. O Allah, forgive us our former and latter sins, our hidden and our manifest sins, and forgive us our excesses and grant us their like.' Then he said: 'O Allah, grant him Your Mercy and Your Forgiveness.' And then he prayed for him more than he prayed for himself (in the earlier supplication). And he said: 'O Allah, make him firm on the path and grant him You Pardon.' [Note: While the hadith narrates a general seeking of refuge from grave punishment and Allah's forgiveness, this specific wording for the deceased is found in other narrations attributed to the Prophet ﷺ, for example, in Sahih Muslim 963 as cited in the main entry, which is more directly applicable to the prayer *for* the deceased.]
