Deceased
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3204

O Allah, forgive [Name of the deceased], and elevate his station among those who are guided. And be his successor among those who remain behind. And forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. And make his grave spacious for him and illuminate it for him.

Allahummaghfir li Fulan bin Fulan, warfa' darajatahu fil mahdiyyeen, wakhlafhu fi 'aqibihi fil ghabireen, waghfir lana wa lahu ya Rabb al-'alamin, wafsah lahu fi qabrihi wa nawwir lahu feeh

When to Read

This supplication is a comprehensive plea for the deceased. It is particularly relevant when remembering someone who has passed, especially if their life involved shortcomings such as slander, as this dua specifically asks for forgiveness and rectification for their deeds. Recite it during times of remembrance, after hearing of a passing, or whenever you wish to make a sincere dua for the departed.

How to Read

When reciting this dua, remember the deceased by name, replacing 'Fulan bin Fulan' with their full name. Ensure you are in a state of purity if possible. Recite with sincerity and focus, contemplating the meaning of the words and seeking Allah's mercy for the departed soul. It is beneficial to also supplicate for yourself and other Muslims.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, encompasses multiple aspects of seeking mercy for the deceased. It asks for forgiveness ('aghfir'), elevation in status ('irfa' darajatahu'), and continuity of good for their lineage ('wakhlafhu fi 'aqibihi'). The part about making the grave spacious and illuminated ('afsah lahu fi qabrihi wa nawwir lahu feeh') is a direct request for comfort in the grave. Making dua for others is a significant act of worship that benefits both the giver and the receiver. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The dua of a Muslim for his brother in his absence is readily answered. An angel is appointed to his side, and every time he makes dua for good for his brother, the angel says: 'Ameen, and likewise for you.'" (Sahih Muslim 2105).

Source & Authentication

Narrated 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say when he prayed over a funeral procession: "O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present among us and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You keep alive among us, keep him alive on Islam, and whoever You cause to die among us, cause him to die on faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of its reward and do not cause us to go astray after that." [Sunan Abi Dawud 3204]. Also related in Sahih Muslim 963, where the Prophet ﷺ taught Abu Salamah when he asked what to say: 'Say: O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, grant him security and forgive the space he occupied (among you), and make him, when he departs from you, a departure to something better than what he left behind.'
