O Allah, forgive [Name of the deceased], have mercy upon him, give him strength, pardon him, honor his hospitality, make his grave spacious, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Give him a home better than his former home, a family better than his former family, and a spouse better than his former spouse. Admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
Allahumma-ghfir li-fulan, wa-rhamhu, wa-'afihi, wa-'fu 'anhu, wa-akrim nuzulahu, wa-wassi' madkhalahu, wa-ghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa-naqqihi minal-khataya kama yunaqqa ath-thawbu al-abyadu min ad-danasi, wa-abdilhu daran khayran min darihi, wa-ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa-zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa-adkhilhu al- Jannata, wa-a'idhu min 'adhabi al-qabri, wa-min 'adhabi an-nari.
When to Read
This comprehensive supplication is recited during the funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) and can also be made individually after the person has passed away, at any time. It is especially poignant when praying for someone who may have had a difficult life or faced opposition, as it encompasses a holistic plea for Allah's complete forgiveness, mercy, and comfort in the hereafter.
How to Read
When reciting this dua for a specific individual, replace 'fulan' (or 'huma' which refers to 'him') with the deceased's name. For example, 'Allahumma-ghfir li Muhammad...' (O Allah, forgive Muhammad...). It is best to recite it with sincere intention and a heartfelt plea to Allah. If reciting for a female, use the feminine pronouns: 'Allahumma-ghfir laha, wa-rhamha, wa-'afiha, wa-'fu 'anha...' etc.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a cornerstone of the funeral supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Its benefits are immense, as it directly asks Allah for the highest forms of mercy and protection for the deceased. It addresses all aspects of their need in the grave and the hereafter: forgiveness for sins, relief from torment, a comfortable dwelling, and entry into Jannah. The emphasis on cleansing from sins, like a white garment from dirt, highlights the purifying aspect of Allah's mercy. Even if the deceased faced many challenges or enemies in this life, this dua is a powerful reminder that Allah's mercy encompasses all things, and our role is to ask for His boundless forgiveness on behalf of our departed brothers and sisters.

Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'When you offer the funeral prayer, say: O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present among us and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You keep alive among us, keep him alive on Islam, and whoever You cause to die, cause him to die on (the path of) faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of its (the reward of this prayer) and do not let us go astray after him.' In another narration, it is reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) taught this specific dua for the deceased: 'O Allah, forgive [Name], have mercy on him, grant him security, pardon him, make honourable his reception, enlarge his place of entering (his grave), wash him with water and snow and hail, and cleanse him from his wrong deeds as You cleansed from impurity the white garment from dirt. And give him in exchange a home better than his home, and a family better than his family, and grant him entrance into Paradise, and protect him from the torment of the grave and from the torment of the Fire.'
