Dua for a Skeptical Deceased: Allah's Mercy for Doubters

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive [Name of deceased], have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his reception, make his grave spacious, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Grant him a home better than his former home, a family better than his former family, and a spouse better than his former spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Allahummaghfir li-fulan (name of deceased), warhamhu, wa 'afihi, wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' madkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataya kama yunaqqa ath-thawbul-abyadu min ad-danasi, wa abdilhu daran khayran min darihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wadkhilhul-jannata, wa a'idhhu min 'adhab al-qabri, wa min 'adhab an-nari.

When to Read

This is a general funeral supplication that can be recited for any deceased Muslim. It is particularly poignant when praying for someone whose faith might have wavered or who harbored doubts, as it directly asks Allah for forgiveness, mercy, and a good outcome, appealing to His vastness and power to overcome any shortcomings.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and a hopeful heart. Ensure you correctly insert the deceased's name where indicated. This supplication can be made individually or as part of congregational prayers for the deceased. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, asking Allah to bestow His boundless mercy upon the departed.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates the core requests Muslims make for the deceased: forgiveness, mercy, well-being, and a good reception in the hereafter. By asking Allah to 'purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt,' we acknowledge our own need for Allah's cleansing grace. The mention of 'honour his reception' and 'make his grave spacious' are profound requests for comfort and ease in the intermediate state (barzakh). It is a comprehensive plea that covers spiritual, physical, and social aspects of the afterlife, seeking Allah's ultimate reward of Paradise and protection from the Fire.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led the funeral prayer and he prayed: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him security and pardon him. Receive him honourably, make his grave spacious, and wash him with water, snow and hail. Cleanse him from sins as You cleansed the white garment from dirt. Give him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and grant him the ability to enter Paradise and protect him from the torment of the grave and the torment of the Fire.' Awf said: 'I said: O Messenger of Allah, make his supplication for him.' He (ﷺ) said: 'I have said for him what you have said.'
