O Allah, forgive [name of deceased], have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, and pardon him. Honor his reception, make his grave spacious, and cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
Allahumma-ghfir li [name of deceased], war-hamhu, wa 'aafihi, wa-afu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' madkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataya kama yunaqqath-thawbul-abyadu minad-danasi, wa abdilhu daran khayran min daarih, wa ahlan khayran min ahlih, wa zawjan khayran min zawcih, wa adkhilhul-jannata, wa a'izhu min 'adhab il-qabri wa 'adhab in-nar.
When to Read
This dua is specifically for the deceased, especially one who may have repented late in life or whose state of repentance was known to Allah alone. It is recited during funeral prayers (Salat al-Janazah) and can also be made as ongoing supplication for the departed, particularly during the first forty days after death, or at any time one remembers them. Making dua for the deceased is a continuous act of mercy from the living to the departed.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, asking for forgiveness, mercy, and protection for the deceased. It is best recited while standing for the funeral prayer, or individually with concentration. If reciting for a specific person, insert their name where indicated by '[اسم المتوفى]'. The prayer is a direct supplication to Allah, so humility and earnestness are key.
Virtues & Benefits
This comprehensive dua encompasses the most crucial requests for the deceased: forgiveness for sins, mercy in the grave and hereafter, comfort in their resting place, and ultimately, entry into Paradise. It reflects the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ own practice and teaching, emphasizing that Allah's mercy is vast and encompasses all whom He wills. For the 'last-minute believer,' this dua is a powerful testament to Allah's attribute of Al-Ghafur (The Oft-Forgiving) and Ar-Rahim (The Most Merciful), acknowledging that sincere repentance, even at the end of life, can be accepted.

Narrated Awf ibn Malik: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray at the funeral of a man and say: 'O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him well-being, and pardon him. Receive him with honor, make his grave spacious, and cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.' Awf said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave a long prayer for him until I wished that I were that man.
