Dua for a Reckless Spender: Seeking Allah's Mercy for the Deceased

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, and grant him well-being, and pardon him. Honor his reception, make his grave spacious, and wash him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him into Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and from the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

This supplication can be made at any time after the person has passed away. It is especially poignant during times of reflection on the deceased, when visiting their grave, or during the period of mourning. Making dua for the deceased is a continuous act of kindness from the living to the departed, and this specific dua addresses concerns that might arise from their worldly actions.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and a heart full of hope for Allah's mercy. Focus on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it. It is best to recite this dua in privacy, perhaps after prayers, or even mentally when you remember the deceased. The intention is to earnestly ask Allah to overlook their shortcomings, particularly any related to financial recklessness, and grant them His immense mercy and Paradise.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this comprehensive dua for the deceased. It covers essential requests for Allah's forgiveness, mercy, well-being, and protection from the grave's torment. For someone who may have been reckless with their wealth, this dua specifically asks Allah to 'wash him with water, snow, and hail' and 'purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt,' which beautifully addresses any impurities or misuses of worldly blessings. It also asks for replacements in the hereafter: a better home, family, and spouse, signifying the immense blessings of Jannah. Making such dua is a vital part of fulfilling our obligations to fellow Muslims, as the Prophet ﷺ said: 'When a person dies, all their deeds end except for three: a continuous charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631)

Source & Authentication

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say about the deceased: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, and grant him well-being, and pardon him. Honor his reception, make his grave spacious, and wash him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him into Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and from the punishment of the Fire.' (Umm Salamah said: 'And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ added these words:) 'And let him rejoice in what You have given him (from the spoils of war).'' (Sahih Muslim 963)
