Dua for a Pious Deceased: Seeking Allah's Mercy

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 904

O Allah, forgive [Full Name of Deceased], raise his rank among those who are guided, and be his successor among those who remain. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Make his grave spacious for him and illuminate it for him.

Allahumma-ghfir li [Full Name of Deceased], warfa' darajatahu fil-mahdiyyin, wakhlufhu fi 'aqibihi fil-ghabirin, waghfir lana walahu ya Rabb al-'alamin. Wafsah lahu fi qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu fih.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication to recite for a deceased Muslim, particularly when one remembers them, hears of their passing, or attends their funeral. It's a beautiful way to continue benefiting them after their departure from this world.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity, focusing on the meaning. Replace '[Full Name of Deceased]' with the actual name of the person. It is recommended to make this dua with the intention of seeking Allah's immense mercy for the deceased, acknowledging their piety and good character, and asking for forgiveness and ease for them in the grave and the hereafter.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates several vital requests for the deceased: forgiveness of sins, elevation of their status in Paradise (as their good deeds continue to benefit them), provision for their family left behind, and immense comfort and light in the grave. It reflects the Islamic belief in the ongoing connection between the living and the deceased through prayer and remembrance, especially for those who were righteous.

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'O Messenger of Allah, why is it that when we are with the sick or the dead, we feel a sense of sadness and have a sense of the strangeness of what we are experiencing?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'What does the world say?' I said: 'I say as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allahumma-ghfir li [name of deceased], warfa' darajatahu fil-mahdiyyin, wakhlufhu fi 'aqibihi fil-ghabirin, waghfir lana walahu ya Rabb al-'alamin. Allahumma-ffsah lahu fi qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu fih.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'That is not right. When you attend the dead, say: Allahumma-ghfir lahu warfa' darajatahu fil-mahdiyyin, wakhlufhu fi 'aqibihi fil-ghabirin, waghfir lana walahu ya Rabb al-'alamin. Allahumma-ffsah lahu fi qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu fih.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what is the meaning of 'Allahumma-ffsah lahu fi qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu fih?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The grave is either a garden from the gardens of Paradise or a pit from the pits of the Fire.'
