O Allah, forgive [Name of deceased] son of [Father's Name], and raise his rank among the guided. And be his successor among those who remain. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. And make his grave spacious and illuminate it for him.
Allahummaghfir li fulan ibni fulan, warfa' darajatahu fil-mahdiyyin, wakhlafhu fi 'aqibihi fil-ghabirin. Waghfir lana wa lahu ya Rabbal-'alamin. Wafsah lahu fi qabrihi wa nawwir lahu fih.
When to Read
This dua is specifically for seeking Allah's mercy for a deceased person, particularly when there are concerns about their final state of faith. It can be recited individually or as part of funeral prayers (Salat al-Janazah) or supplications made after the burial. It is a general supplication for the deceased, but its inclusion here addresses the nuanced situation of someone who may have had wavering faith.
How to Read
Recite with sincerity and focus, visualizing the deceased receiving Allah's mercy. Replace 'fulan ibni fulan' with the actual name of the deceased and their father's name. The primary intention is to ask for Allah's forgiveness and mercy, acknowledging His absolute knowledge and justice. If reciting during Salat al-Janazah, this specific wording would be part of the supplication after the fourth *takbir*.
Virtues & Benefits
This prayer, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is a profound act of mercy towards the deceased. It seeks Allah's boundless forgiveness and elevation of their status, even if their earthly life was marked by struggles or doubts. By asking Allah to be a successor to the departed, we acknowledge our reliance on Him and His power to care for those we leave behind. The request for a spacious and illuminated grave is a supplication for comfort and peace in the Barzakh (intermediate state). It underscores the Islamic belief in the efficacy of dua from the living for the benefit of the dead.
Source & Authentication
Narrated by 'Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed the funeral prayer over a dead person, he would say: 'O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whomsoever You cause to live, let him live on Islam, and whomsoever You cause to die, let him die on faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not cause us to go astray after him.' (Sahih Muslim 904). The specific wording used in the entry is a common and comprehensive supplication for the deceased, capturing the essence of seeking divine mercy and forgiveness.
