Dua for a Deceased Who Faced Extreme Poverty: Seeking Allah's Reward for Their Patience

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him (or her) and have mercy on him, and grant him well-being and pardon him, and honor his reception, and make his resting place spacious, and cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him into Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and from the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma-ghfir li (name of deceased) war-hamhu, wa 'aafihi wa-'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' madkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-maa'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataayaa kamaa yunaqqath-thawbul-abyadhu minad-danasi, wa abdilhu daaran khayran min daarihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa adkhilhul-jannata, wa a'izhu min 'adhaabil-qabri wa min 'adhaabin-naar

When to Read

This is a general supplication for any deceased Muslim. It is particularly poignant for someone who endured hardship and poverty in this life, as it asks Allah to compensate them in the Hereafter with His immense blessings, mercy, and forgiveness. We can recite this dua at funerals, during memorial gatherings, or simply whenever we remember the deceased, making it a continuous act of charity for them.

How to Read

This dua is best recited with sincerity and a hopeful heart, seeking Allah's boundless mercy. It's important to focus on the meaning of the words, visualizing Allah's forgiveness and reward for the deceased. While this specific wording is for the deceased, the underlying principles of asking for forgiveness, mercy, well-being, and protection from the Fire apply to our own lives as well. If possible, reciting it after the prescribed prayers or during times when duas are readily accepted (like between the Adhan and Iqamah, or on a Friday) can enhance its spiritual impact.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encompasses several crucial requests for the deceased: forgiveness of sins, mercy from Allah, physical and spiritual well-being, a comfortable final resting place, purification, and protection from the grave's torment and the Fire. For those who faced poverty and hardship, this dua is a beautiful way to ask Allah to grant them a reward befitting their patience and steadfastness in this world, a reward far greater than any worldly wealth. It embodies the Islamic belief that true prosperity lies in the Hereafter, where Allah's generosity is absolute. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua, showing its immense value and importance in seeking the best for our departed brothers and sisters.

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'O Messenger of Allah, what is it that makes me not talk to the women who have lost their husbands?' He said: 'If the woman's husband dies, she should not marry again until she completes her term (of waiting - 'iddah).' She said: 'I have completed my 'iddah of four months and ten days. And 'Abdullah ibn 'Abd al-Asad (her first husband) has died, and he is my husband. And I have no desire to marry again.' She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what should I say?' He said: 'Say: Allahumma-ghfir li war-hamni, wa 'aafi-ni wa-'fu 'anni, wa akrim nuzuli, wa wassi' madkhali, waghsil-ni bil-maa'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqini minal-khataayaa kamaa yunaqqath-thawbul-abyadhu minad-danasi, wa abdil-ni daaran khayran min daari, wa ahlan khayran min ahli, wa zawjan khayran min zawji. Wa adkhilnil-jannata, wa a'iz-ni min 'adhabin-naari, wa min 'adhab al-qabri.' She said: 'O Allah, forgive me and have mercy on me, and grant me well-being and pardon me, and honour my reception, and make my resting place spacious, and cleanse me with water, snow, and hail. Purify me from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. And replace my home with a better home, my family with a better family, and my spouse with a better spouse. And admit me to Paradise, and protect me from the punishment of the Fire, and from the punishment of the grave.' She said: 'I said it, and Allah gave me a better husband than him (Abu Salamah) – Abu Salamah himself told me that Allah had sent him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: 'O Messenger of Allah, your marriage with Umm Salamah is blessed.' And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Yes.' And I (Umm Salamah) said: 'This is what I said.' (And she is referring to the supplication). (Sahih Muslim 963)
