Dua for a Deceased Who Endured Hardship: Seeking Allah's Mercy and Reward for Their Patience

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and grant him well-being, and pardon him, and honour his reception, and make his resting place spacious, and cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his worldly home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication for a deceased Muslim. It can be recited at the time of death, during the funeral prayer, immediately after burial, or at any time thereafter as a way to send continuous reward and mercy to the departed soul. When we hear of someone passing, especially someone we know who may have faced significant trials in life, reciting this dua is a beautiful way to remember them and ask Allah to ease their transition.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention, focusing on the meaning and imploring Allah's immense mercy. It's best recited while facing the Qiblah, though not strictly necessary. The emphasis is on the heartfelt plea to the Most Merciful, seeking forgiveness, comfort, and Paradise for the deceased. Imagine Allah's mercy enveloping them as you speak the words.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a comprehensive request for the deceased. It asks for Allah's forgiveness for their sins, His mercy, and well-being. It seeks ease in their grave and protection from its torment, and ultimately, entry into Paradise. For those who faced difficult circumstances, the phrases 'wa akrim nuzulahu' (honour his reception) and 'wa wassi' madkhalahu' (make his resting place spacious) are particularly poignant, asking Allah to make their final abode a place of peace and honour, far better than any hardship they may have experienced in this life. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua, showing its immense value in seeking the best for our departed brothers and sisters.

The full hadith describes the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teaching this supplication to his companions to be recited for the deceased: When the funeral bier of one of you is presented, let him say: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and grant him well-being, and pardon him. O Allah, make his reception honourable, and make his grave spacious, and wash him with water, snow, and hail. O Allah, purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. O Allah, give him a home better than his home, and a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. O Allah, admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.'
