O Allah, forgive [Deceased's Name], have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his reception, make his grave spacious, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Grant him a home better than his former home, a family better than his former family, and a spouse better than his former spouse. Admit him into Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, and do not subject us to trial after him.
Allahumma-ghfir li [Deceased's Name], warhamhu, wa 'aafihi, wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' madkhalahu, waghsilhu bilmaa'i waththalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataaya kamaa yunaqqath-thawbul-abyadu minad-danasi, wa abdilhu daaran khayran min daarihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa adkhilhul-jannata, wa a'idhu min 'adhaabil-qabri wa 'adhaabin-naari. Allahumma laa tahrimnaa ajrahu, wa laa taftinaa ba'dahu.
When to Read
This supplication is specifically recommended to be recited for a deceased Muslim brother or sister. While it is a general supplication for the deceased, it carries particular weight when seeking Allah's mercy for someone whose affairs are uncertain due to having committed minor shirk, which is associating partners with Allah in matters less than major shirk (which expels one from Islam). The supplication asks for purification and forgiveness, essential for anyone facing the Hereafter.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart, remembering that Allah's mercy encompasses all things. It is best recited after the funeral prayer or at any time you wish to make dua for the deceased. Place your hand on your heart and supplicate as if you are standing before Allah. Ensure you mention the deceased's name where indicated. Making dua for fellow Muslims is a sign of brotherhood and is highly rewarding.
Virtues & Benefits
This comprehensive dua seeks Allah's immense mercy and forgiveness for the deceased. It asks for protection from the torments of the grave and the Fire, and for the best of rewards in Paradise. For someone who might have committed minor shirk, this dua is crucial as it aims for Allah's ultimate purification and acceptance. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to make such supplications for our departed loved ones, emphasizing the power of our prayers to benefit them in the grave and beyond. It also reminds us not to be led into fitnah (trial) after their passing, urging us to remain steadfast in our faith.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from 'Awf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed over a funeral and said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him relief and make his entry good, and widen his grave and wash him with water, snow and hail, and purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. And give him a home better than his home, and a family better than his family, and admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.' He said: 'And grant him a spouse better than his spouse.' And the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'And let us not be tried after him, and do not deprive us of his reward.' (Meaning: Do not deprive us of the reward for our supplication for him).
