Dua for a Deceased Struggling with Addiction: Allah's Mercy and Freedom

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him, honor his reception, make his grave spacious, wash him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma-ghfir li-hu wa-rham-hu, wa 'afi-hi wa-'afu 'an-hu, wa akrim nuzula-hu, wa wassi' mudkhala-hu, wa-ghsil-hu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqi-hi minal-khataya kama yunaqqa-th-thawbu-l-abyadu minad-danasi, wa abdil-hu daran khayran min dari-hi, wa ahlan khayran min ahli-hi, wa zawjan khayran min zawji-hi, wa adkhil-hu-l-jannata, wa a'idh-hu min 'adhabi-l-qabri wa 'adhabi-n-nari.

When to Read

This dua is the standard supplication taught for any deceased Muslim. It is particularly poignant when recited for someone who may have struggled with addiction, as it encompasses comprehensive pleas for Allah's forgiveness, mercy, and purification from the effects of sins, seeking a fresh start in the hereafter. You can recite this at funerals, during times of remembrance for the deceased, or at any point you wish to make a sincere supplication for them.

How to Read

Recite with sincere intention and a humble heart, focusing on Allah's boundless mercy. It is best recited facing the Qiblah if possible, though not a strict condition. The emphasis is on the heartfelt plea for the deceased's forgiveness and well-being in the next life.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua embodies the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ teachings on seeking Allah's forgiveness and mercy for the departed. By asking for 'well-being and pardon,' 'purification from sins,' and 'a better home,' we are directly asking Allah to overlook the shortcomings of the deceased and grant them the best of the hereafter. For someone who battled addiction, this dua is crucial as it asks for a complete cleansing, much like the white garment purified from all stains, symbolizing a fresh slate before Allah. The Prophet ﷺ himself taught this dua to his companions for the deceased, indicating its immense importance and efficacy.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from `Auf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed over a funeral and he said: 'Allahumma-ghfir lahu wa-rham-hu, wa 'afi-hi wa-'afu 'an-hu, wa akrim nuzula-hu, wa wassi' mudkhala-hu, wa-ghsil-hu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqi-hi minal-khataya kama yunaqqa-th-thawbu-l-abyadu minad-danasi, wa abdil-hu daran khayran min dari-hi, wa ahlan khayran min ahli-hi, wa zawjan khayran min zawji-hi, wa adkhil-hu-l-jannata, wa a'idh-hu min 'adhabi-l-qabri wa 'adhabi-n-nari.'
