Dua for a Deceased Stranger to Good Deeds

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him. Honor his reception, make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him from sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. Grant him a home better than his home, family better than his family, and spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

This dua is specifically for praying for a deceased Muslim, regardless of our personal relationship with them. It is especially poignant when praying for someone we didn't know well, or perhaps someone whose life was not outwardly marked by great piety. Our supplication for them is a mercy we extend, hoping Allah extends His mercy to them.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt plea for Allah's mercy upon the deceased. While it's most powerful when recited after a prayer, or at the graveside, it can be made anytime and anywhere you remember the deceased. The key is the intention and the earnestness of the supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encapsulates the core requests we make for any deceased Muslim. It seeks Allah's forgiveness, mercy, and protection from the trials of the grave and the Fire. It's a profound expression of brotherhood/sisterhood in faith, praying for their ultimate well-being in the Hereafter, even if their worldly deeds didn't outwardly reflect deep devotion. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua, highlighting its importance and comprehensiveness in seeking the best for the deceased.

Source & Authentication

When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed over a dead body, he would say: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him and give him security and make his noble lodging spacious. O Allah, wash him with water, snow, and hail, and cleanse him from his sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. O Allah, give him a home better than his home, and a family better than his family, and grant him the company of the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous. Verily, Allah is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us be led into temptation after him.' (Sahih Muslim 963)
