O Allah, forgive [Name of deceased], have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his reception, make his grave spacious, wash him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his worldly home with a better one, his family with a better one, and his spouse with a better one. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
Allahumma-ghfir li [Fulan], wa-rham-hu, wa-'aafi-hi, wa-'afu 'an-hu, wa-akrim nuzulahu, wa-wassi' madkhalahu, wa-ghsil-hu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-barad, wa-naqqi-hi minal-khataaya kama nuqqiyath-thawbul-abyadu minad-danas, wa-abdil-hu daaran khayran min daari-hi, wa-ahlan khayran min ahli-hi, wa-zawjan khayran min zawji-hi, wa-adkhil-hul-jannah, wa-a'idh-hu min 'adhabil-qabri, wa-min 'adhabin-naar.
When to Read
This is a comprehensive supplication for any deceased Muslim, especially one who may have carried burdens of guilt. It can be recited at any time after their passing, particularly during funerals, memorial gatherings, or simply whenever you remember them and wish to supplicate for them. Making this dua is an act of compassion and a fulfillment of our duty to our fellow Muslims.
How to Read
When reciting, replace '[Fulan]' with the name of the deceased person. If you are unsure of their gender, you can use the masculine form 'hu' or 'hi' as a general pronoun, or adapt to 'ha'/'hi' for a female. The key is the sincerity of your intention. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, envisioning Allah's mercy encompassing the deceased. It's ideal to recite with a heart full of hope in Allah's infinite forgiveness and compassion.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is the supplication the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to recite for a deceased person. Its comprehensiveness covers forgiveness, mercy, well-being, purification, and protection from the grave and hellfire. Allah's mercy is vast, and a sincere dua from a living believer can bring immense relief to the deceased, especially if they were weighed down by regrets or sins. The Prophet ﷺ stated: 'When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except for three: an ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631) This dua embodies the essence of a righteous child's prayer.

Narrated Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i: I attended the funeral prayer of a man from among the companions of the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ). As he was being carried on the plank, I said: 'May Allah have mercy on you.' Upon this, the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'May Allah have mercy on you, may He pardon you, may He grant you well-being, may He allow you a noble reception, may He make your place of entry spacious. May Allah wash you with water, snow and hail, and cleanse you from sins as a white garment is cleansed from filth. May He give you in exchange a house better than your house, and a family better than your family, and may He admit you to Paradise and protect you from the torment of the grave (or torment of the Fire).' (Awf b. Malik al-Ashja'i said:) And upon him the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) also said these words. Sahih Muslim 963
