O Allah, forgive [name], and raise his rank among those who are guided. Grant his succession among those who remain behind. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Make his grave spacious and illuminate it for him.
Allahummaghfir li [name], warfa' darajatahu fil mahdiyyeen, wakhlafhu fi 'aqibihi fil ghabireen, waghfir lana wa lahu ya Rabb al-'alamin, wafsah lahu fi qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu feeh
When to Read
This is a comprehensive supplication to make for any deceased Muslim, especially when attending their funeral prayer or visiting their grave. It's particularly poignant for someone who was known for their good deeds and helping others, as this dua encompasses asking for forgiveness, guidance, and ease in the grave for the deceased, and remembrance for their family.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart, directing your supplication to Allah. If you are making it for a specific person, mention their name in place of '[name]'. It is a beautiful practice to make this dua regularly for all deceased Muslims, keeping in mind their struggles in the hereafter and our connection to them as part of the Ummah.
Virtues & Benefits
Making dua for the deceased is a sign of our brotherhood and sisterhood in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that the supplications of the living can benefit the dead. This particular dua encapsulates several vital requests: forgiveness of sins, elevation of status, remembrance for their lineage, and comfort in the grave. Allah's Messenger ﷺ said: 'When a person dies, all their deeds end except for three: an ongoing charity, knowledge that is benefited from, or a righteous child who supplicates for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). Making such a comprehensive dua fulfills the latter part of this hadith.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from 'Amr bin Al-'As that he said: 'When you place me in the grave, throw dust on me evenly, then turn over the soil and remain around my grave for the time it takes to slaughter a camel and distribute its meat, so that I may enjoy your company and ascertain what answer I may give to the messengers (angels).' 'Abd Allah bin Abu Bakr narrated to me from his father that he heard him say: 'When they finished with 'Amr bin Al-'As, they went to his grave and sat around it. One of his sons was called Ibn 'Abd Allah, and when he saw them, he said: 'O my father, how I hear the sound of your voice!' But he did not answer him. Then they said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to do this for him.' It was narrated from Sa'id bin Al-Musayyab that he said: 'When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the funeral prayer over the deceased, he would say: 'O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our young and our old, our males and our females, those who are present and those who are absent, our free and our slave. O Allah, whom You keep alive among us, keep him alive on Islam, and whom You cause to die, cause him to die on faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not cause us to go astray after him.'
