Dua for a Deceased: Seeking Forgiveness and Mercy for Impatience

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, and pardon him, and honor his hospitality, and make his grave spacious, and wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him from sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. Give him an abode better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

This dua is suitable to be recited at any time after the passing of a Muslim, especially during times of communal prayer, funerals, or on the anniversary of their death. It is particularly poignant when remembering someone who struggled with impatience in their life, as the dua encompasses comprehensive pleas for Allah's mercy, forgiveness, and protection, which are essential for all deceased.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and humility, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. It is recommended to face the Qiblah if possible, though not a strict requirement. Beseech Allah with conviction, asking Him to grant the deceased the immense forgiveness and mercy that covers all shortcomings, including any struggles with patience.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for the deceased, covers essential aspects of seeking Allah's favor for the departed. It asks for forgiveness of sins, mercy, well-being (pardoning and protection from harm), and honor in their final resting place. The comparison of cleansing from sins to a white garment signifies purity and acceptance. Seeking a better abode, family, and spouse reflects the hope for Paradise. Protection from the grave's torment and the Fire are paramount concerns. While not directly addressing impatience, this general supplication for the deceased helps offset any sins or shortcomings, including those stemming from character traits like impatience, by seeking Allah's boundless forgiveness and mercy.

Source & Authentication

When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ led the funeral prayer, he used to say: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and absolve him and honor his reception, and make his grave spacious, and wash him with water and snow and hail, and purify him from his sins as You purify the white garment from filth, and give him a better abode than his abode, and a better family than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse, and admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the torment of the grave and the torment of the Fire.'
