Dua for a Deceased: Seeking Forgiveness and Mercy for a Soul Known for Arrogance

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive [Fulān (name of deceased)], have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, and pardon him. Make his resting place honorable, and his entrance spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins just as a white garment is purified from dirt. Grant him a home better than his former home, a family better than his former family, and a spouse better than his former spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma-ghfir li [Fulān (name of deceased)] warhamhu wa 'aafihi wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' madkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-maa-i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khaṭaaya kamaa yunaqqath-thawbul-abyaḍu minad-danasi, wa abdilhu daaran khayran min daarih, wa ahlan khayran min ahlih, wa zawjan khayran min zawjih, wa adkhilhul-jannata, wa a'idhhu min 'adhab il-qabri, wa min 'adhabin-naar.

When to Read

This supplication is specifically for when a Muslim passes away. While the specific wording here is a general prayer for the deceased, its application to someone known for arrogance highlights the importance of remembering that Allah's mercy is vast and we should not despair of His forgiveness for any soul, regardless of their worldly shortcomings. It is a beautiful reminder that our duty is to pray for them, leaving their judgment to Allah.

How to Read

When reciting this dua, it's recommended to do so with sincerity and humility. Replace '[Fulān (name of deceased)]' with the actual name of the person. You can raise your hands in supplication as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did for the deceased. Focus on the meaning of the words and supplicate earnestly, asking Allah to envelop the deceased in His vast mercy.

Narrated by 'Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying over a bier. Give him a house better than his house, and a family better than his family, and grant him to enter Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave (or from the punishment of the Fire).'
