Dua for a Deceased Seeker of Knowledge

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, and grant him well-being and pardon. Honor his reception, make spacious his entrance, and wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Grant him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

This supplication is recited for a Muslim brother or sister who has passed away, especially if they were actively engaged in the pursuit of Islamic knowledge. It can be recited at the funeral, during the mourning period, or anytime one remembers the deceased.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and heartfelt remembrance of Allah. Imagine yourself making this earnest plea to your Creator for your deceased loved one. It's best to face the Qiblah if possible, though not a strict requirement, and to raise your hands in supplication as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The prayer is for forgiveness, mercy, and protection for the deceased in the hereafter.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua embodies the core requests for the deceased: forgiveness, mercy, a dignified reception in the grave, cleansing from sins, and a place in Paradise, while being shielded from the Hellfire. The emphasis on seeking knowledge highlights the importance of this endeavor in Islam, and a prayer for someone who died in this state is particularly poignant, reflecting the value Allah places on striving for His deen.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Awf ibn Malik: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the funeral prayer for a dead person, and I remember him saying as he was praying: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and keep him safe and sound and of noble lineage, and cause his grave to be spacious and fill it with light for him.' He then said: 'O Allah, grant him a comfortable life and a blessed end, and may You be pleased with him, and may You be pleased with his return and with his grave and with his burial.' He also said: 'O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, and do not try us after him, and forgive him and us, O Lord of the worlds.' He said: 'And he (the Prophet ﷺ) said: 'May Allah's mercy be on him, or May Allah grant him His mercy.'' (Sahih Muslim 963)
