O Allah, forgive [Name of deceased] son of [Name of deceased's father], and elevate his status among those who are guided. And leave behind for him a posterity who will pray for him. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. And widen his grave and illuminate it for him.

When to Read
This dua is deeply meaningful when recited for someone who has passed away, especially if they dedicated their life to public service. You can recite it at any time, but it is particularly poignant during funeral prayers (Salat al-Janazah), at the graveside, or during times of remembrance for the deceased. Making it part of your regular supplications for your loved ones is also a beautiful way to honor their memory.
How to Read
When reciting this dua, it is recommended to have sincere intention and a humble heart. Replace 'fulan ibni fulan' with the actual name of the deceased and their father's name. Focus on the meaning of the words, asking Allah for His mercy and forgiveness for the deceased, and for their rank to be raised. If reciting at the grave, face the qiblah while making dua, or face the grave if that is more practical. The core is the sincerity of your supplication.
Virtues & Benefits
This comprehensive dua encapsulates several profound requests: seeking Allah's forgiveness for the deceased, asking for their rank to be elevated amongst the guided, and praying for righteous descendants who will continue to remember them. It also includes a plea for Allah to expand and illuminate their grave, a comfort for the living who wish peace for the departed. For public servants, this dua acknowledges their contributions by asking for their elevated status, recognizing their efforts in serving the community, which Allah may count as part of their good deeds.

The narration from Sahih Muslim states that Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) mentioned the prayer that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to recite for Abu Salamah when he died: 'Allahumma Ighfir li Abi Salamah, warfa' darajatahu fil-mahdiyyeen, wakh-lufhu fi 'aqibihi fil-ghabireen, waghfir lana wa lahu ya Rabb al-'alamin, wafsah lahu fi qabrihi wa nawwir lahu feeh.' (O Allah, forgive Abu Salamah, and elevate his status among those who are guided, and leave behind for him a posterity who will pray for him. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. And widen his grave and illuminate it for him.) While this specific dua was for Abu Salamah, its general wording makes it suitable for any deceased Muslim, especially those whose lives touched many through service.
